   Ravel n°141

The RAVeL is a network of roads reserved for slow users, i.e. non-motor vehicles and users: Pedestrians, cyclists, people with reduced mobility, roller skaters, … The RAVeL network is an autonomous network offering routes on its own sites, away from the roads where motor vehicles circulate. Most of the RAVeL routes are made up of tow paths. They are comple-mented by a series of former railway lines (as in this case at Court-Saint-Etienne) and byways, resurfaced in this purpose. The network to Court-Saint-Etienne makes up the fifth RAVeL.

Mont-Saint-Guibert

'Grande chaussée'

A nature reserve located in a crossroads some metres from the former Mont-Saint-Guibert brewery. The reserve covers an area of 3 hectares, whose steep slopes are covered with beautiful examples of pedunculate oaks, maples, poplars, cherry trees, ash trees and elms. Free entry.

Villers-la-Ville

Natural reserve of Gentissart (Mellery)

The former sand quarry at Gentissart, located between Tilly and Mellery in the commune of Villers-la-Ville was acquired in 1996 by the Province of Walloon Brabant with a view to creating a teaching and biological interest site. The use of sand from below the level of the phreatic layer gave rise to several lakes totalling nearly 7 hectares free from any pollution. In addition to these lakes, this site with an area of 26 hectares is made up of varied environments (wild land, embankments, sandy areas, words, etc).
Thanks to a Management Committee composed of 19 members most of whom are scientists (biologists, geologists, botanists, etc), the inventories made to date on the site at Gentissart have allowed its biodiversity and biological potential to be highlighted.
The public and schools can visit, by arrangement only, to discover and watch nature. Moreover, an observation post is accessible from outside (rue de Gentissart) to allow everyone to discover the water birds among other things. These, like the insects and amphibians, benefit from privileged habitat at Gentissart. The vegetation is also a particularly interesting diversity since it hosts hundreds of species. Given the ecologically scientific value of this sand quarry, it was awarded the title “site Natura 2000”. For further information, please contact: +32.(0)10.23.62.85 - www.brabantwallon.be

Walhain

Belgian Geographical Centre in Walhain

The Belgian Geographical Centre, inaugurated on 22 August 1998, is located at “Le Tiège”, Nil-Saint-Vincent. It is embodied by a metallic sculpture, which is the work of the architect Bernard Defrenne. The triangle represents Belgium, the three pylons symbolise the three regions, the pyramid indicates the place and the metal tube pointing to the sky marks the precise centre whose coordinates are :
Latitude : 50° 38’ 28 ’’ North,
Longitude : 04° 40’05’’ East.

The metal structure is erected on a base which represents the earth’s crust. Three plaques give information in the three national languages: German, French and Dutch.
In 1919, the municipality of Ittre was conferred the title of geographical centre of Belgium. However, a few months later, the Treaty of Versailles enlarged Belgium with the annexation of Sankt Vith, Eupen and Malmédy. But is was only in 1995 that the French National Geographic Institute redid the calculation, which was confirmed by its Belgian counterpart the following year.
